Nestled in the heart of Mexico, within the rugged mountains that span the central and southern regions of the country, a gorgeous yet minute rattlesnake, Crotalus ravus, holds its ground. This unique species, found exclusively in the highlands of Mexico, boasts a distinctive range that stretches from the Mexican Plateau to the Sierra Madre del Sur. C. ravus, is known to inhabit the Mexican Plateau in the temperate regions characterized by moderate to high elevations with a emphasis on high desert and pine oak forest. This species thrives in areas ranging from approximately 1,490 meters (4,890 feet) to just over 3,000 meters above sea level. The mountains of Mexico, including Morelos, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca, and the Sierra Madre del Sur in Guerrero, serve as the primary abode for C. ravus. The historical context of the species is intriguing, with the type locality designated as the "Table land of Mexico." Cochran's interpretation in 1961 pointed to the "south tableland, Veracruz, Mexico." This specific geographic range adds a layer of mystique to the species, emphasizing its preference for the elevated and often challenging terrains of Mexico's interior. Despite its relatively widespread distribution, Crotalus ravus has not escaped the conservation spotlight. While the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists it as of "Least Concern," the Mexican government took note of potential threats to the species, leading to its classification as "threatened" in 2010. The decision to categorize C. ravus as threatened highlights the delicate balance between its ecological niche and the ever-evolving landscape shaped by human activities. Understanding the factors contributing to this classification is crucial for the development of effective conservation strategies aimed at preserving the unique biodiversity of Mexico's mountainous regions.
In the scorching July of 2022, we embarked on a thrilling adventure with our dear comrades from Herping Zoongolica to the elevated deserts of central Veracruz. Our mission? To take environemtal data and photographs of ravus. Our pursuit took an unexpected turn when, in the heat of the day, we stumbled upon a solitary giant, sending us into a frenzy to capture its essence through our lenses. The urgency was palpable as the colossal creature sought refuge in a thicket, prompting my friend Stephen to shout from a nearby ridge, "RAVUS! GET HERE NOW!" As I ran toward him, I tossed a compact, collapsible hook, only to be met with Stephen's insistence on something more substantial. Little did I know, this insistence was justified, for as we successfully extracted the creature, its enormity became apparent—stretching over 20 inches in length.

The first ravus during the day
At an elevation surpassing 2000 meters and with daylight slipping away, I braced myself for the possibility that this might be the sole encounter with C. ravus in this location. However, nature had other plans for us. Despite the challenging conditions, the night unfolded with the discovery of an additional XXX animals, defying our expectations and leaving us in awe of the secrets hidden in the elevated realms of central Veracruz.
